What objects have defined over 400 years of Portsmouth? This is a core question that guided the Portsmouth Historical Society’s current exhibition, “A Sense of Place,” which accompanies the recent publication “A History of Portsmouth NH in 101 Objects.”
“Our show includes constellations of tangible objects—maps, landscape views, business-related artifacts, objects of daily use, and many other diverse materials. Each object illuminates passages and personages of Portsmouth’s history in expressive ways that often move beyond the typical historical narrative and that help bring the publication to three-dimensional life,” explained Portsmouth Historical Society, Curator Gerry Ward.
