“Entanglements” brings together the work of Ruth Sykes and Matt Toole, two artists who approach natural forms sculpturally and through repetitious and meditative drawings. These artists are concerned with overlooked or unseen details, transitory spaces, liminal states and life as a dynamic force. Through rigorous, process-oriented making, these artists approach abstraction as a vehicle for thought. They both challenge preconceived notions of their respective media: sculpture references line; drawing seems to move and take on form. Finely detailed works on paper become physically intensive, and robust sculptures seem in delicate balance. In conversation, the artists present us with an entirely new landscape – one that recontextualizes our own.
