On view through March 2, 2025

“Liberatory Living: Protective Interiors and Radical Black Joy” presents an extraordinary collection of designs, artworks, and environments that reflect the global necessity for Black people to create spaces not just for revolutionary action, but for radical joy and rest. Drawing on bell hooks’ concept of “Homeplace” and Elizabeth Alexander’s notion of the “Black interior,” the exhibition explores how these feminist frameworks inform the creation of spaces that foster belonging, safety, and Black empowerment.

Featuring the work of sixteen contemporary designers and artists, “Liberatory Living” provides a sensory exploration of Black identity, beauty, and joy through furnishings, wall coverings, lighting, ceramics, and more. The exhibition is a transformative invitation to rethink interior design as a space for dismantling colonial legacies and nurturing Radical Black Joy.
