Arts & Education at the Hoyt is a vibrant community arts center and historic house museum located in the former homes of Alexander Crawford and May Emma Hoyt.
Hoyt West: A step back in time.
Step back in time to explore the house known as Hoyt West! You can view many of the accoutrements of our city’s “golden age”, including leaded glass windows, elaborate wood work, and silk wall coverings. Or investigate more domestic novelties such as an early central vacuuming system, clothes dryer, and coal cellar still full of coal!
The 12,500 sq.ft. home was designed by architect Frank Faulke for Alexander Crawford Hoyt and his wife, June in 1914. The concrete and steel beam construction took nearly three years to complete in the Tudor Revival style. The estate includes a matching carriage house and greenhouse. To discover the art, architecture and antiquities of this gem, call 724.652.2882 for a guided tour.
Hoyt East: A center for the arts.
Ignite your imagination in Hoyt East! Every inch of the 7500 sq. ft. building houses classrooms, galleries and studios. Be inspired by arts, language and music classes throughout the year. Or check out the website for a robust schedule of exhibits, concerts, festivals, school programs and after-school programs. Guests are often enchanted by our collection of Shenango China, once produced for royalty, presidents, hotels, and railroads. The display also features Shenango’s museum line debuted by Eva Zeisel at the Museum of Modern Art in 1946. Other public spaces boast the contemporary works of Wolf Kahn, Romare Bearden, Robert Motherwell, Ed Eberle and many others. Lastly, shop the museum gift shop while you are here for original, handcrafted wares by area artists and artisans.
Hoyt East was designed by Frank Faulke for Alexander’s sister, May Emma Hoyt. It broke ground within months of Alexander’s home and was completed in 1917. Hoyt East is similarly constructed but in the Greek Revival Style. Likewise, many of the architectural features have been retained.
