The Edmond Historical Society & Museum is housed in a historic armory, built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration. The Edmond community began meeting and collecting artifacts in 1983 with the goal of starting a museum. The first exhibit opened in 1985 and the site is now home to 40,000+ artifacts and photographs. Free admission is offered to the 15,000 – 20,000 annual visitors, primarily coming from the Edmond and Oklahoma City area, but with increasing world-wide traffic along Rt. 66. Exhibits: The museum regularly changes exhibits, all of which connect to Edmond’s history. Permanent exhibits include the themes of Early Edmond Culture, from Native Americans to Pioneers, Religion, and Edmond’s Rt. 66. Temporary exhibits in 2021 include, I Remember That: Edmond in the 1980s, What’s Cooking, Edmond?, The Olympics, and Trees in Our Town.
