The Granger Homestead was the home of Gideon Granger, the longest-serving Postmaster General in US History under Presidents Jefferson and Madison.
The frame structure of this historic site is composed of two sections: a Federal-style main block with central hall plan constructed in 1815-16; and a rear wing, added in 1860. The principal, west facade, faces North Main Street.
To the rear of the property there are several outbuildings:
• an early 2-1/2 story frame barn, slightly altered and moved about 1900,
• a 2-1/2 story school building constructed in 1876 and moved in 1907 for use as a stable,
• a modern storage building for the display of carriages,
• the law office of Walter Hubbell, local attorney, under whom “The Little Giant” Stephen A. Douglas studied and was moved to its present site in the 1950s, and
• a small brick acetylene gas house constructed about 1904.
