The Heurich House Museum exists in the late-19th century Dupont Circle mansion, carriage house, and grounds built for German-American immigrant Christian Heurich, whose brewery was the largest in DC and a household name.
Today, the Museum explores the American Experience through the stories surrounding Christian Heurich and his brewery, and creates an equitable path to success for local small-scale artisans, makers, and craftspeople. Our historic interpretation focuses on people whose voices have previously been muted – household staff who were often people of color, craftspeople and artists who decorated Heurich’s home, immigrant brewery workers, and women in the family. Through this work, we update and elevate traditional notions of what a historic house museum can be: an organization that supports modern-day artists, tells empathetic and inclusive histories, serves as a community gathering space, and enhances its neighborhood’s cultural and economic ecosystem.
