The Jacksonville History Center’s mission is to connect communities and strengthen citizenship through history education. The nonprofit was founded as the Jacksonville Historical Society on May 3, 1929, 28 years to the day after the Great Fire of 1901 burned over 2,000 homes and destroyed a 146-block area. While initially collecting items of historical memorabilia over the years, the organization evolved to also advocating for endangered landmark buildings. One of these, the Merrill House, built in 1879, was moved to its current location in 2001 and restored over the next 4 years. Now considered one of the finest Victorian-era house museums in the South, tours may be scheduled by calling the office at 904-665-0064 or emailing [email protected]
