Founded in 1799, the Peabody Essex Museum is the nation’s oldest continuously operating museum. Today, PEM stewards a collection of over 850,000 objects representing the art and culture of African, American, Asian, European, Native American, and Oceanic peoples, and the Phillips Library’s 400,000 objects, books, manuscripts, and archival materials. PEM’s main campus in Salem, MA, includes Yin Yu Tang, a 200-year-old Chinese home. PEM also owns and maintains 20 pre-Civil War historic homes throughout Salem. We have nearly 130,000-square feet of guest-accessible space and more than 2,000 works on view.

Visitors can dine at the Atrium Café, where we serve entrees, soups, sandwiches, sweet treats, and beverages, along with gluten-free and child-friendly options.

Additionally, our Museum Shop offers shoppers a carefully curated selection of merchandise inspired by our diverse collections and changing exhibitions. Our second storefront, Marine Hall Mercantile, located at 177 Essex Street, includes an eclectic variety of nautical finds, games, puzzles, and items inspired by Salem’s history and PEM’s historic homes. All purchases help support our exhibitions and educational programs.
