In “Out of Body,” Samira Abbassy finds inspiration in the practice of faith healing, and shares paintings, drawings, and sculpture that examine the human body as a psychological and spiritual vehicle as well as a scientific organism. She mines ideas from centuries-old Islamic medical manuscripts, European anatomical diagrams, alchemical iconography, and medieval Christian reliquaries. In her hands, these objects and images transcend science, and the body becomes a vehicle for psychological metaphors, portraying a variety of conflicts and dilemmas.
