Inspired by Dutch vanitas paintings, in which the viewer is meant to contemplate the passage of time and inevitability of death, Philadelphia artist and teacher Peter Paone created a series of still life paintings featuring seemingly-disparate objects. Cakes, cats, asparagus, skeletons, birds, and fish are combined into still lifes that are full of tension, contradictions, and reflections on the artist’s own history. “Still life painting is much more than a composition of household goods,” Peter Paone said. “It’s a gathering from a journey of a life lived.”
