No one may have felt the weight of this past year more than our nation’s youth. 2020 was a year of upheaval and focused social action in the face of the global COVID-19 pandemic: the Black Lives Matter movement, the CZU Lightning Complex Fire, and the U.S. presidential election.
For the tenth anniversary of ArtNow, NUMU invited students to submit works in response to the theme “Good Trouble” in tribute to Congressman John Lewis. The term “Good Trouble”, coined by the late Congressman John Lewis (1940-2020), is a prompt that embodies the spirit of social activism so strongly present through the year 2020. From his activist work as a Freedom Rider marching on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965 to his decades-long legislative work on the Voting Rights Act, Congressman Lewis never strayed from his pursuit of justice and equality.
