This spring, the Mattatuck Museum in downtown Waterbury presents “Ascendancy: the self in contemporary art,” a group exhibition featuring 105 local, national, and international artists examining how identity is constructed, performed, and reclaimed today.
Guest curated by Camilo Alvarez, the exhibition brings together painting, photography, textiles, sculpture, and mixed media to challenge stereotypes and foreground self-representation as both a personal act and a political gesture. From intimate portraiture to bold abstraction and stitched and woven works, Ascendancy highlights artists who are redefining agency, authorship, and visibility in contemporary art.
