This fall, Biggs Museum of American Art invites visitors into the strange, theatrical, and deeply imaginative world of celebrated painter and printmaker Peter Paone with “Before Words: The Art of Peter Paone.”
The exhibition offers an unprecedented look at a body of work Paone developed over decades but rarely exhibited publicly. Created primarily in acrylic gouache mixed by the artist, sometimes incorporating graphite and collage, the works reveal an extraordinary cast of characters and environments shaped by Paone’s distinctive combination of fantasy, art historical reference, dark humor, and human observation.
