Julie Chen: True to Life
On view through February 12, 2021
National Museum of Women in the Arts
Washington, D.C.
Internationally recognized artist and teacher Julie Chen creates elaborate books that call for readers to do more than simply turn pages to uncover her poetic reflections. Chen creates sculptural artist’s books from handmade papers and other materials, employing a wide variety of forms. Her works marry text and complex structures to convey her contemplations on the passage of time, forms of grief, the human quest for discovery and other deeply personal concerns as readers peer through a tunnel created by accordion pages or flip the slats of a Venetian blind-like structure in order to read the text.
The exhibition, presented by the Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center at the National Museum of Women in the Art (NMWA), includes more than a dozen captivating works from the Californian’s 33-year career.
