“A Certain Slant of Light,” curated by Michael Abrams, brings together found objects from nature with Michaela Harlow’s gestural pastel and charcoal drawings created en plein air during winter in New England. A floor-based sculpture of sticks and rocks extends her artmaking into three dimensions.
Inspired by the Emily Dickinson poem “There’s a certain Slant of Light,” Harlow’s artwork translates the season’s veiled light and shifting forms into a universe of marks, gestures, and color that evoke both the physical landscape and the emotional resonance of time spent in nature. “This installation reveals the chaos of creating work outdoors in the dead of winter,” Harlow said, “when a certain slant of light reveals the shadowy side of nature and the value of embracing all seasons.”
