In this exhibition from the New Bedford Free Public Library’s art curator, Allie Copeland, we get a new look at whaling from a Japanese perspective. Beginning in the 18th century, feudal lords who oversaw whaling efforts commissioned emakimono, or picture scroll, to illustrate whale hunting methods as well as anatomically describe the known species of whales.
