German-born art dealer and collector Heinz Berggruen (1914–2007) assembled one of the world’s most important private collections of twentieth-century European modern art. In Paris during the mid-twentieth century, he operated a gallery that featured works by modern artists such as Georges Braque, Paul Klee, and Henri Matisse, forming lasting relationships with several of them, including Pablo Picasso. Today, Berggruen’s legacy lives on through his collection, housed primarily in Berlin’s Museum Berggruen, which is part of the Neue Nationalgalerie. Showcasing approximately 100 works by artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Klee, Matisse, and Picasso, “Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen” invites viewers to encounter Berggruen’s life and vision through a remarkable collection shaped by personal relationships with artists and a deep commitment to modern art.
