For “The Alchemy of Re.Use,” Katja Hettler and architect Jula Tüllmann worked with two community groups—Helping Hands Crochet Club in Miami, Florida, and TAPCCO in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The works created by these two groups echo the communal nature of the Shakers as they put their hands to work to create objects for use and for sale, and their commitment to never letting resources go to waste.

All of the contemporary pieces created for the exhibition have been sourced from re-used materials recycled into new objects, and two of them—Schemel and Hialeah Picnic Blanket (left and right above, respectively)—are being sold via silent auction, with the proceeds going to Shaker Museum as well as a Miami-based charity that works with unhoused community members.
