Gerald Saladyga, first prize winner of the Mattatuck Museum’s 2025 MIXMASTER competition, invites viewers into a universe of his making. Influenced by the flattened perspective of Byzantine mosaics, Saladyga draws on conventions of the past to project a dystopian future. Political unrest, environmental catastrophes, and military imposition unfold alongside scenes of daily life in his monumental paintings. His work examines what lies beneath the surface of society and the volatile spaces that people create and inhabit.
