This summer, Berkshire Botanical Garden (BBG) showcases the impressionistic paintings of award-winning New York artist and author Adam Van Doren, whose work frequently explores the relationship between historic architecture and the natural landscape. Inspired by the work of renowned painters Richard Parkes Bonington, John Singer Sargent, Edward Hopper, and Andrew Wyeth — artists who also incorporated the built environment into their landscapes — Van Doren often works in watercolor, the medium favored by many of these masters. “Working outdoors, en plein air, is central to my art,” Van Doren has said. “Watercolor, which can be easily transported and worked quickly while the light changes, provides the perfect outlet for painting in situ.”
